BRIGGS MOTORS L SERIES, THIS IS THE MODELS THAT DO NOT HAVE OHV!! HERE IS THE STORY; I BOUGHT A USED PACER PUMP WITH 150 HOURS OR SO ( I KNOW THIS FOR SURE AS I USED IT MOST OF THOSE HOURS!!) THE MOTOR IS A 3 HP WITH 170 GPM @ 2" NICE SIZE!! AFTER 1.5 YEARS OF USE THE MOTOR GOT A KNOCK AND WAS LOW ON COMPRESSION AND FINALLY GOT TO THE POINT IT WOULD NOT MAKE ENOUGH HORSE POWER TO PUMP WATER IT WOULD JUST KILL THE MOTOR!! SO WE JUST BOUGHT A NEW ONE FOR THE TREE FARM!! SO IT SET FOR 3 YEARS IN THE CLEAN GARAGE.. FINALLY I GOT THE GOLD BUG AND DECIDED TO BUY IT FROM THE FARMER FOR A LOW PRICE!! WELL FIRST THINGS FIRST; I DECIDED TO CLEAN IT UP AND INSPECT THE PUMP AND THE GAS TANK. CLEANED IT UP AND DECIDED TO PULL THE HEAD (FLAT HEAD ON THE OLD BRIGGS!) IT WAS FULL OF CARBON AND DEPOSITS FROM GAS.. WELL A WIRE WHEEL AND PLASTIC SCRAPER MAKES SHORT WORK OF THIS!! I USED A SMALL WHEEL IN THE BORE AND PISTON TOP MAKING SURE TO GET ALL OF THE CARBON OUT WITH AN CLEAN OIL RAG!! PUT IT BACK TOGETHER AND TOOK THE CARBURETOR OFF AND CLEANED THE WHOLE THING.. THE FUEL PUMP DIAPHRAGM WAS STUCK TO THE HOUSING IT TOOK SOME COAXING BUT IT CAME LOOSE!! ( THIS IS WHY BRIGGS WANTS YOU TO USE FUEL STABILIZER! ) SO I PUT THE WHOLE THING BACK TOGETHER!! CHANGED THE OIL AND FLUSHED THE CRANK CASE WITH FLUSH TO GET THE OLD STUFF ALL OUT!! THEN PUT FRESH GAS IN WOW IT RAN!!! STARTED ON 3RD PULL!! I THOUGHT AT THIS POINT IT WAS FIXED SO I TOOK THE GEAR TO THE CREEK AND SET IT UP AND PRIMED THE WATER PUMP STARTED THE MOTOR RAN FOR A MIN OR TWO STARTED TO TAKE GOOD PRIME THEN DIED, HUMMMMMMM!! SO I STARTED AGAIN THEN IT DIED, SO I STARTED AGAIN THEN IT DIED, SO I STARTED AGAIN THEN IT DIED, (WELL YOU GET THE PICTURE AT THIS POINT I WAS GETTING POOPED!!) SO I PACKED THE GEAR BACK OUT WHEW THE AC WAS NICE AND COLD IN THE CAR!! SO AT THIS POINT I WAS TIRED OF MESSING WITH IT AND SPENT THE MONEY FOR A NEW 5.5 PACER WITH OHV!! ( WORKS GREAT!!) TWO WEEKS WENT BUY I DECIDED TO LOOK INTO IT... THE COMPRESSION WAS ALMOST NON EXISTENT!! HUMMMMM WELL!! SO I DID SOME R&D IN TO IT! I DECIDED TO CALL BRIGGS AT THIS POINT!! TALKED TO THE TECH AND FOUND FOR FREE ON THE WEB SITE www.briggsandstratton.com THEY HAVE THE PDF FILE OF ALL THE MOTORS PARTS LIST AND BLOW UP PIX UP THERE FOR FREE!! REAL NICE OF THEM!! SO I ASKED THEM WHAT THE LASH FOR THE VALVES SHOULD BE!! HERE IS THE SPEC HE GAVE ME; ALL IS IN INCHES; THIS IS FOR THE ALUMINUM CYLINDER ( KLEEN BORE ) SERIES MODELS # 60000, 80000, 90000, 100000, 110000, 120000 . INTAKE VALVE AT LOBE AT BDC. COLD .005" min - .007" MAX (IN INCHES) EXHAUST VALVE AT LOBE AT BDC. COLD .007 " MIN - .011" MAX ( IN INCHES) E-MAIL IF YOUR MODEL NUMBER IS NOT HERE I WILL LOOK UP YOUR NUMBER FOR YOU!! WELL FIRST THINGS FIRST!! TAKE IT ALL BACK APART!! DOWN TO THE INSPECTION COVER OF THE VALVE SPRINGS ON THE SIDE OF THE MOTOR CARBURETOR OFF, MUFFLER OFF, STARTER COVER OFF, HEAD OFF, INSPECTION COVER OFF, THEN RELEASED THE VALVE SPRING RETAINER IT IS SLOTTED SO REMEMBER EACH PART AND WHERE IT GOES!!.... WHEW!! DOWN TO CHECKING THE LASH!! THE VALVES WERE + .002 ON INTAKE (OPEN ALL THE TIME!!) AND .005 ON THE EXHAUST VALVE.... WOW!! I THINK I HAVE A WINNER!! SO NOW TO MAKE THE GUESS OF HOW MUCH TO FILE OFF THE VALVE!! USE A GOOD NEW FINE MILL BASTARD FILE!! IT CUTS THE VALVE REAL GOOD!! TAKE THE VALVE OUT OF THE MOTOR, TAKE A FEW STROKES AT A TIME!! NO MORE THAN 3-5 STROKES (REMEMBER YOU CAN ALWAYS CUT MORE OFF BUT YOU CANNOT PUT IT BACK ON!!) SO WITH SEVERAL FITTINGS I GOT IT!! WOO HOO!! LOOKED FINE!! SO BACK TOGETHER IT WENT ALL OF IT!! PRIMED IT BY PULLING SLOW WITH CHOKE ON AND IGNITION OFF THEN TURNED IT ON AND IT STARTED ON TH FIRST PULL!! I REACHED THE THROTTLE AND IDLED IT DOWN.... MAN IT IDLED TOO!! I SHUT IT OFF THEN STARTED IT AGAIN WOW IT HAD REAL COMPRESSION NOW!! I WILL POST WHAT IT DOES WHEN IT STOPS RAINING!! KEEP YOUR PAN WITH YELLER IN IT!!
