GOLD LOCATIONS IN WYOMING
ALBANY COUNTY, WYOMING
In the southwestern part of Albany County the placers were found along Douglas Creek in 1868. Later lode veins were discovered and they yielded copper, silver and gold. The total production is well over 10,000 ounces and the fact that the district has been idle since 1900 should interest the amateur prospector.
Lake Creek and Muddy Creek
Lake Creek and Muddy Creek, near their junction with Douglas Creek have also been known to produce gold and claims still exist. There are unclaimed areas to prospect.
CARBON COUNTY, WYOMING
Brush Creek
The Brush Creek drainages began attracting gold prospectors in 1875. The first recorded claims were in 1876 when a group of miners including Stephen Downey claimed 160 acres at the mouth of Lincoln Creek.
Brush Creek drains the area known as Gold Hill. Gold Hill is at a elevation so summer does not arrive until late July or August. Time has not permitted me to prospect the Gold Hill district.
But good gold has been found on the creeks that come from the area. In 1977 there were two diamonds found on one of these creeks, Cortez or Cortex creek.
Nuggets have been recovered along these drainages with a metal detector. This area is
worth prospecting. There are good camp grounds. The nearest services are in Saratoga
Wyoming.
Converse County Wyoming
Esterbrook
On the north slope of the Elkhorn Mountains, east of La Bonte Creek, near Esterbrook, in the NW 1/4 of the NE 1/4 section 21 T29N R71W is the Snowbird Group of mines. These were primarily copper, but had a by product of gold.
Crook County Wyoming
Sundance
Northwest of Sundance 8 miles, in the Bear Lodge Mountains is the Copper Prince Mine. On dumps at this mine you can find native gold and scattered small particles with malachite and chrysocolla. In section 17~20 T52N R63W is the Hutchins Consolidated Gold Mining Company Mines. The Nigger Hill placers were small but heavily worked. At the Nigger Hill placers you will find abundant nuggets and grains of gold often attached to fragments of glassy quartz, with great quantities of tourmaline, cassiterite and small red garnets. In the area of Warren Peaks, .5 miles northeast of the central peaks, a gold bearing ledge extends for several hundred yards in a northwest - southeast direction. Here you will find some gold traces.
FREMONT COUNTY, WYOMING
Gold was discovered about 25 miles south of Lander in 1842, but mining did not begin seriously until at least the early part of 1870. There are many placers, but lode gold has been the most important. Some authorities credit the area with about 90,000 ounces of gold. It is an area where local inquiry could be very important in finding gold.
Goshen County Wyoming
Cheyenne
Northeast of Cheyenne 65 miles and 6 miles west of the Nebraska line in T19N R61W, is the Goshen Hole Placers, which embraces about 10,000 acres of watercourse, bench and terrace gravels. This is extremely fine placer gold.
Jay Elm
West of Jay Elm and .5 miles west of the highest peak in the Rawhide Buttes at corner of sections 2, 3 10 and 11 T30N R64W, is the Copper Belt Mine Company Mine. This was primarily a copper mine, but produced a by product of gold. You will also find the Omaha Mine and the Gold Hill Mine in the same area. The Emma claims had some gold showings.
Hot Springs County Wyoming
Embar
West of Embar in the headwaters of Owl Creek, southwest of the Washakie Needles, is the Owl Creek district. The area Creek Gravels are rich placers, but lack water. The quartz vein outcrops produce free gold. This are was discovered in 1860's, but the prospectors were driven out by Indians in 1867 and not much done since then.
Johnson County Wyoming
Buffalo
Southwest of Buffalo at the head of Kelly Creek, is the Kelly Creek Mine, Millsite and placer gold location. This area has basal sandstone of the Deadwood Formation, so a geology map of the Deadwood Formation may show more possible gold locations. West of Buffalo 17 miles in section 15 T49N R83W, is the Roe Brothers Copper Mine. The assays at this mine showed a small amount of gold with the copper.
Laramie County Wyoming
Granite Canyon
Granite Canyon is located in the Silver Crown district. Northwest of the Simmon's Ranch, on Middle Cow Creek, is the Lenox Mine. .25 miles southwest of the Lenox Mine, close to the bank of Middle Cow Creek, is the Julia Lode. .25 miles northwest of the Julia, is the Agata Prospect, which produced some spectacular specimens of native gold. 2 miles north of Granite Canyon is the Great Standard Group of mines. Out 4 miles from Granite Canyon, in sections 25 and 26 T15N R70W is the Arizona Mine. Many other mines in the Granite Canyon area.
Hecla
Hecla is 7 miles from Granite Canyon and is the location of the Yellow Bird Mine. At the Yellow Bird Mine on dumps you can still find traces of gold in pyrite. In section 24 T14N R70W is the Hecla Mine. In section 22 there are many other mines.
Laramie
Northeast of Laramie, to an area 8 miles west of the Platte-Laramie county lines, 45 miles north of the Colorado border, is the Horse Creek Placers. This placers are in Tertiary stream gravels.
Lincoln County Wyoming
In the extreme north part of the county in T34N R114 and 115W is the Horse Creek prospects. In the northwest corner T37N R116W at the mouth of Pine Creek, on the South side of the Snake River, is the Pine Bar Diggings. The Pine Bar Diggings is barren on the top 8 foot of soil, but you will find gold on bedrock below the overburden. On a Terrace at the mouth of Pine creek 50 feet above the water level and about 600 feet wide you will find some productive placer ground. On the east side of the Snake River, from the Mouth of Bailey Creek .5 miles north, in SW 1/4 T38N R116W is the Davis Claim. The gravel bars of the Snake River and its tributaries contain very fine flour gold. On the area terraces you can find fine placer gold.
Natrona County Wyoming
Casper
South of Casper 11 miles in T32N R79W is the Koch Deposit. It consisted of Koch manganese and feldspar with a seam of black material the cuts granite. The gold and silver are in the black seam.
Park County Wyoming
All along the Shoshone river below the mouth of Alkali Creek, in gravel and sand deposits you can find placer gold.
Clark
In the area near Clark, along the Clark's Fork River, in gravel deposits you can find placer gold.
Cody
Northwest of Cody 50 miles (35 miles southeast of Cooke City, Montana), in the Absorak Mountains, is the location of the Sunlight Basin district, which contained many old mines and prospects. Near Cody, in a series of quartz - pyrite vugs and crutifications in fracture zones you will find free milling gold. Near Lower Copper Lake, in complex silver-tungsten deposits there were minor occurrences of gold. In the argentiferous galena veins, especially on the Hoodoo claim you can find minor occurrences of gold. In chalcopyrite veins you can find small amounts of gold. In the pyrite-chalcopyrite-gold veins, especially the Big Goose Mine you can find native gold as grains and flakes. In complex silver veins, especially the Tip Top Claim you will find minor lode gold deposits.
Meeteetse
Along the Wood River, in black sand deposits you will find placer gold. Southwest of Meeteetse by 38 miles, in T45N R104W is the Kirwin Mine which produced native gold stringers.
Sylvan Pass
South of Sylvan Pass in SW 1/4 section 2 T51N R109W, is the Crouch Gold Prospect, which was operated in the 1930's, for lode gold. 2 miles north of the Crouch Prospect, in all watercourse gravels you can find placer gold.
Valley
Valley is located well southwest of Cody, near the confluence of Needle Creek with the South Fork of the Shoshone River. This is known as the Stinking Water Region and area mines produced minor lode gold deposits.
Platte County Wyoming
In section 22 T25N R66W, in the pre-Cambrian rocks there was an old lode mine that produced gold and silver.
Uva
Area exposures of the Arikaree formation the sands contain finely disseminated gold.
Wheatland
Southwest of Wheatland 10 miles, in the Cooney Hills, in section 20 T23N R69W, is the Cooney Hill Prospect, which was primarily a low grade copper prospect with gold traces. Southwest 15 miles, on the south side of the Cooney Hills, is the Whippoorwill Claim, which produced lode gold with copper and silver. West 22 miles on Slate Creek is the Independence Group of Mines which produced minor amounts of gold.
Sheridan County Wyoming
Sheridan
In T54N R87W, the Mosaic Claim produced lode gold. West of Sheridan about 60 miles on U.S. 14 and 14 Alt., on top of the Big Horn Mountains, take the north trending dirt road to the Bald Mountain area in T56N R91W. This is the old site of Bald Mountain City. Sometimes this old city was called "Baldy". It is at an elevation of 9,000 feet on the headwaters of the Little Big Horn River. There were many old mines in the area. North from here toward Montana line, in the disintegrated granite you will find fine grained free milling gold. 1 mile west of Sheridan you will find the old log structures of the old Forunatus Mill. The area around the Mill contains intrusive dikes or chimneys that have minor amounts of gold in them.
Teton County Wyoming
Jackson
South of Jackson the gravel bars of the Hogback River near its junction with the Snake produces placer gold in small amounts.
